Somerset County

 

Somerset County is named for Mary, Lady Somerset, who was the sister-in-law of Caecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore.

Description:  The building faces south and is a two story red colored brick and Indiana limestone structure. The south front has a large portico with four columns rising to a balcony on the second story. At the roof line is a pediment. The second story windows are arched. The building has a west wing. The roof is hipped.

History:  The county was created in 1666 and no county seat was selected. The first courthouse was built in 1675 at Lichester. The second courthouse was built on the south side of the Manokin River at Unity. In 1694 Dividing Creek was selected as the county seat and the third courthouse was built there in 1796. .In 1742 the county seat was moved to Princess Anne. The fourth courthouse was built in 1747 and later burned in 1831. The fifth courthouse was built in 1833 and the sixth and present courthouse was constructed on the same site at a cost of $28,451.
