Gillespie County is named for Robert Addison Gillespie, who was a Texas Range, an Indian fighter, a merchant and a soldier in the Mexican-American War.

Description: The building faces north and is a two story buff colored brick and concrete structure. The rectangular shaped building is located on spacious landscaped grounds in the center of Fredericksburg. The north front has a center section which rises above the roof line, with the entrance on the first story and a glass window above. The base of the building is polished red colored granite. White colored horizontal bands runs below and along the flat roof line. In the interior, the courtroom is located on the second story. The building houses the State District Court and Constitutional County Court. The building was a Public Works Administration project.

Description: The building faces north and is a two story buff colored stone structure. The building is located on spacious landscaped grounds in the center of Fredericksburg on the west side of the present courthouse. The north front has a one story portico at the projecting center section. Above are two vertical windows with gable at the roof line. The roof is hipped. The former courtroom was located on the second story. The building was restored in 1966. The architect was Milton Moseley. The building is now the Fredericksburg Memorial Library library.

History: The county was created in 1848 and Fredericksburg was selected as the county seat. The first courthouse was a two story frame structure designed by Henry Beazley and built by Jacob Arhelger. The second courthouse was constructed in 1881 to 1882 at a cost of $23,000 and is still standing. The third and present courthouse was constructed in 1938 to 1939 at a cost of $145,000.
