Walker County is named for John William Walker, who was a United States Senator from Alabama.

Description:  The building faces south and is a three story white colored limestone structure. The building is located on landscaped grounds in the center of Jasper. The south front has a projecting center section with two limestone dividers with the entrance in the center of the first story. The east and west wings are lower and project from the main building. The central section rises three stories. The windows are vertical with dividing panels. The building houses the County Circuit Court of the 14th Judicial Circuit and the County District Court and County Probate Court. The building was restored in 1975 after a tornado on April 3, 1974. The architect was Cobb / Adams / Benton, Architects Inc. and the contractor was Sparks Construction, Inc.

Description:  The building faces west and is a three story red colored brick, concrete and glass structure. The building is located in the center of Jasper on the north side of the courthouse and has horizontal windows with wide horizontal concrete sections. A wide white colored band runs along the flat roof line.


History:  The county was created in 1823 and Jasper was selected as the county seat. The first courthouse was built in 1865. The second courthouse was built in 1877 and the third courthouse was built in 1887. The fourth courthouse was designed by Smith & Carter and constructed by B C Bynum in 1907 at a cost of $200,000. The building was destroyed by fire in 1932. The fifth and present courthouse was constructed in 1932 to 1933.
