Fond du Lac County is named for the French words meaning “bottom of the lake” referring to the location of the county.

Description: The building faces east and is a three story stone, glass and concrete structure. The rectangular shaped building is located on landscaped grounds in the center of Fond du Lac. The brownish colored building has copper tinted windows and the third story extends out from the building. Horizontal concrete slabs divide the floors and vertical supports divide the recessed windows. The main entrance at the center of the east side has a square concrete portico. A low two story wing connects with the Sheriff’s Office on the south side of the building. The roof line is flat. In the interior is an entrance lobby. There are five County Circuit Court courtrooms on the second story. The building houses the County Circuit Court of the 4th Judicial District. The building also houses city offices and is named as the City County Government Center.

History: The county was created in 1836 and Fond du Lac was designated as the county seat. The first courthouse was a plain wood structure located on Main Street. The second courthouse was a two story brick structure designed by S H Green in 1882 to 1884. In 1925 an addition was added. The courthouse was remodeled in 1965 and demolished in 1981. The third and present courthouse was constructed in 1980 to 1981.
