Description: The building faces south and is a four story yellow colored stone faced structure. The rectangular shaped building is located on landscaped grounds in the center of Mitchell. Vertical stone dividers separate the windows on the second to fourth stories. At each corner the first story projects in a square addition to the main building. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the County Circuit Court courtroom is located on the south side of the third story and has a high ceiling extending into the fourth story. The second County Circuit Court courtroom is located on the north side of the second story. The building houses the County Circuit Court of the 1st Judicial Circuit and the County Magistrate Court.

Description: The building faces east and is a two story light red colored brick and concrete structure. The building is located on landscaped grounds to the southwest of the center of Mitchell. The building was formerly a hospital, the north part of which was demolished and the south part was converted into detention center and courthouse. The building has horizontal windows and angled corners with a high central tower. The east front has a canopy. The roof line is flat. In the interior, the County Circuit Court courtroom is located on the northeast side of the second story.

History: The county was created in 1873 and Firesteel was selected as the county seat in 1874 when the county was organized. The county seat was moved to Mitchell in 1880. The first courthouse was built by H H Calhoune and Davison Company in 1882 to 1883 at a cost of $20,000. The second and present courthouse was constructed in 1936 to 1937 at a cost of $120,000.
